What do opossums look like?
Approximately the same size as a house cat, the opossum is generally whitish or grayish in coloring and are equipped with a rat like tail. Another telltale feature of possums is their tracks; track from both the front and hind feet look like little hands.
Are opossums dangerous?
For people, opossums are more of a nuisance pest getting into to trashcans, raiding bird feeders and stealing pet food left outside. However, if threatened they may bite in addition to baring their teeth, growling, screeching, emitting a foul odor; it may also play dead. They are a serious threat for poultry, game birds and nests.
Why do I have an opossum problem?
Like other wild animal, possums may be attracted compost piles, garbage cans and pest food left outside. If your home is near a swamp or stream or if your property provides sources of food, you could very well run into an opossum. Also, because they are great climbers, you could find them in the attic.
