Bed Bugs◀ Back To Pest Guide
What do bed bugs look like?
Bed bugs are small brownish insects just under a ¼ inch long.
Bed bugs are oval in shape, flat and about as wide as they are long.
Immature bed bugs are much smaller, about 1mm and lighter in color.
Bed bug eggs are very smart, about 1 mm in size and whitish in color. They are difficult to see to the naked eye.
After a blood meal, bed bugs will appear to be reddish in color.
Are bed bugs dangerous?
Bed bugs are not transmitters of disease but bed bug bites may result in red, itchy welts that often appear in rows of several bites, this pattern is commonly referred to as breakfast, lunch and dinner. Interestingly enough, not everyone reacts to bed bug bites and some have delayed reactions. Though not a dangerous pest to health, bed bugs can be quite destructive to a company’s reputation and business and result in significant stress and emotional turmoil.
Why do I have a bed bug problem?
Bed bugs are not caused by poor sanitation or ones social status but can be introduced into an environment via luggage, used furniture, on belongings and even people who were recently exposed to an infestation. Oftentimes, bed bugs are brought home after traveling or introduced on houseguests and even arrive home with college students on break.

Bed bug prevention tips
Due to their superior hitchhiking and breeding abilities, bed bugs are not an easy pest to prevent. However, you should:
Know the signs of bed bugs which are live bed bugs and/or eggs, blood stains on bed linens, very small black marks (fecal matter about the size of pepper) on or near the sleeping area and of course bed bug bites.
Learn how to avoid bed bug infestations.
Inspect used furniture, clothing and other items before bringing them into your home.
Unpack your suitcase outside or in the garage upon returning from a trip to prevent the spread of these pests if they are present. Clothes should be washed immediately in the hottest water permitted by fabric and luggage should be wiped before storing.
