College Students: Avoid bringing bed bugs home◀ Back To Blog
May 7, 2012
Now is the time of year when college students are cramming for their final exams and spending hours in the library trying to study, while not thinking about summer vacation. While students are thinking about their summer plans and home cooked meals, parents are anticipating their college student’s arrival home. With the excitement of coming home and summer, do not let the excitement stop you from taking pre-cautionary measures to avoid bringing bed bugs home from school.
Bed bugs thrive in places where there are many people, so college dorm rooms can provide a perfect environment for an infestation according to The National Pest Management Association (NPMA). In fact, in a recent survey by the NPMA, 35% of pest control professionals indicated that they have encountered infestations in college dormitories.
Avoid Bringing Bed Bugs Home from School:
Place all belongings into plastic bags to bring home.
Immediately empty belongings into your washing machine. Wash and dry on the highest heat setting. For items that will not be used while home, place in plastic containers.
For items that cannot be washed and dried, inspect the items carefully looking for signs of bed bugs.
Vacuum your vehicle thoroughly, vacuuming all nooks and crannies where the belongings were transported. Discard the vacuum bag or canister immediately into the garbage.
In the coming weeks, if you notice bites or staining on your bedding contact your local pest control expert.
